For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required” (Luke 12:48)
I am blessed.
My family is blessed.
While I could undoubtedly come up with a laundry list of things that could be better or things that would make me happier, I know in my heart that we could be a lot worse off. We have food, shelter, clothing and a host of other things that allow us to be comfortable. Having been on the opposite end of comfortable, I know what it means to go without. And for that reason, I make it a point to give whatever I can to help those in need. That’s why when I received an email on Thursday about volunteering for the Open Door Mission’s Super Duper Giveaway Saturday, I didn’t hesitate to sign up. The Open Door Mission serves thousands of people who are experiencing homelessness and poverty. They offer food, clothing, special programs, classes, transportation, emergency shelter and so much more. This Saturday, they were giving away EVERYTHING. From diapers to furniture to food to clothes, it had to go. I’ve volunteered there before, but I’ve never taken Jam with me. This Saturday, however, I thought that it would be a great learning experience. Although she’s only 4, it’s important for her to understand the importance of community, selfless giving and teamwork.
We headed down to the center and were immediately overwhelmed at the number of people there:
People were everywhere and we, as volunteers, were kind of lost. However, once we got into the swing of things, it was definitely an enjoyable experience:
Jam was the designated “Yellow Ticket Taker” for the food pantry!
So many people commented on her being there. They seemed happy to see a tiny human serving and helping. She wasn’t in the way and knew exactly what she was supposed to do. There was another little girl, a bit older than Jam, who was also helping. I was very happy to see so many children there.
Once she was done, she had to strike a few poses.
And so did I…
This was a great way to spend my Saturday. Not only was I able to help others, I got to do it with my babycakes. I’m so proud of her!!! Team #HappyMommy all the way!
